What a great way to kick off our blog with the opening of the first ever Company of Strangers retail outlet in Dunedin, at 320 George Street. Sara Aspinall, a Dunedin local, created this label in 2008 and it is only now that her shop has established its own presence in Dunedin’s Edinburgh Way. It’s not been an easy ride for Sara who has had to weather the effects of theft, fire and the Christchurch earthquake to get where she is now. We attended the launch party last night and what a fabulous event it was. Buzzing with family, friends and fashionistas, it wasn’t long before we found ourselves quickly absorbed in the inclusive vibe and sipping on fruit punch! The shop interior is spacious and minimalistic, which makes the colours of the clothing literally pop off the racks. Her latest Autumn/Winter 13 collection is aptly named ‘Pop Shop’ and takes its influence from New York street artist Keith Haring. The signature piece, the purple and black ‘Subway Sweater’, is colour blocking at its best. This amazing piece was painstakingly crocheted by Dorothy from Mosgiel – great to see local talent being harnessed. Sara has also collaborated with Dunedin artist Philip James Frost to produce the coca-cola print featured on her ‘Foundation Dress’. We absolutely love your collection Sara!
