Postcards From Central

Dear Dunedin,

Much as we love you, a change is as good as a rest. And there’s so much to explore in this part of the South Island. Hills and harbour may have become mountains and lakes, but one thing remains the same – our quest to seek out creativity and good coffee.

Wanaka’s ’47 Frocks’ is one of the best designer shops to have sprung up in the Southern Lakes area. Dunedin, we were reminded of you when we found pieces by Company of Strangers, and jewellery by Underground Sundae and Creeps and Violets. We were served by the lovely Trudie Millar and Ben Boyne. Trudie is a stylist and Ben has his own label ‘Thoughts Of BOYNE’, specialising in ballgowns and streetwear.

Edgewater Resort on Lake Wanaka makes fabulous scones. This one is crystallised ginger with rhubarb and lime compote and cream.

Guess what Dunedin, we managed to track down a Charmaine Reveley ‘Heartest of Hearts’ dress on sale at Bella, Wanaka. We must make a trip to her workroom in Dowling Street when we get home.

Wanaka is all about boutique cinemas. With so many amazing films recently released, we had to make a trip to both The Paradiso (for ‘Philomena’) and Ruby’s (for ‘The Railway Man’). Both gave us the ultimate viewing experience with comfy couches at The Paradiso and la-z-boy chairs at Ruby’s. The tasty treats and great coffee were a bonus.

Dunedin diners, when you’re next in Wanaka, do try Bistro Gentil (76a Golf Course Road). It can’t be beaten for quality of food, attentive staff, location and its amazing wine machine. The owner is also an art dealer and uses the restaurant to showcase some interesting sculptures and paintings.

After all the eating, we needed some exercise. What better than a quick march up Mt Iron.

These Are A Few Of Our Favourite Things From 2013

We have lots to shout about in Dunedin from our beautiful suburbs to our innovative creative talent. This showcases both plus a few extra things we’ve picked up along the way. Thanks to Ross Creek for being a great photographic location.

Happy New Year Dunedin!

At the strike of midnight, thousands of Dunedinites were gathered to kick start 2014 with a bang. The Robbie Burns cannon fired a single salute and then came the spectacular fireworks!
