Grace About Town: August

It’s great to see how well New Zealand’s doing in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow – currently in sixth position with 14 gold medals (what an exciting netball match between NZ and England!). So, we thought we should celebrate Dunedin’s Scottish heritage with a fresh take on tartan.

Dunners has many Edinburgh connections. But, one of our most stunning gothic buildings, the University of Otago clocktower complex, bears a strong resemblance to the University of Glasgow. Our obliging model, Grace Coddington (supermodel and creative director of American Vogue), posed on campus wearing as many Scottish-inspired pieces as we could find.

Fabulous Finds 8

The last few weeks have been surreal and exciting. Now it’s back down to earth with some bargains!

As usual, Two Squirrels Vintage in Milton has come up trumps with another lovely vintage dress, this time from the early 1940s. Closer to home, Maher shoes (in Wall Street Mall) really impresses with their unique and affordable footwear. New Zealander Glen Maher owns the company and designs all the shoes which includes the best men’s shoes around. The re-vamped and re-opened Dunedin Paper Bag Princess store is now run by a local and it shows! There’s some great bargains to be found for both vintage and designer lovers.

The Cuckoos Have Built A New Nest

And what a great job they’ve done! Ethical boutique, The Cuckoo’s Nest, now has a new nesting spot at 82 St Andrew Street. At the re-launch party last Friday, we were overwhelmed with the meticulous care and attention that has been poured into this project. The shop is both charming and enticing, with jewellery creatively displayed under glass domes and in vintage drawers hung on walls. The owners/managers, Annika Metua (University of Auckland medical student) and Susan Wardell (University of Otago PhD student), are committed to supporting local designers and providing ethical consumer choices. We think they are wonder women; Susan even found time to give birth to a baby girl recently! So, if you are pro fair trade, recycling and vintage, this shop is a must for your Christmas shopping.

We’re Nuts For The Two Squirrels

Two Squirrels Vintage in Milton has only been open for just over a month and we’ve already been there three times – we just can’t keep away! Warren and Vanessa’s vintage clothing and collectibles are second to none for quality, originality, condition and especially price. They really go the extra mile which is why their carefully selected pieces just fly out the shop! As you can see, it’s impossible for us to come away empty handed.

Market 22 Celebrates Its First Anniversary

When Donna and Kat Gibbons started Market 22 a year ago, their vision was to provide an outlet for Dunedin crafts people to showcase their creativity. Last Saturday’s anniversary market proved that this goal had been achieved with a large variety of unique and affordable treasures to suit all tastes.
