The Last Post

At the end of March, our ceramic poppy from the iconic installation ‘Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red’ at the Tower of London, finally arrived. And thankfully in one piece! It was one of the 888,246 poppies we photographed back in September 2014, each poppy representing an individual British or Colonial soldier who had died in the First World War. Of these poppies, about 18,000 represented New Zealand lives lost.

It’s So Green!

How lucky are we to be living in a city where the urban landscape is so green. From Dunedin’s town belt to the native bush of Ross Creek to the distant hills of the peninsula, there’s an abundance of lush vegetation. It’s good to be green with fashion too and we’re not spoilt for choice – second-hand, vintage, recycled, upcycled and eco-friendly.

Why we love …

NOM*d – for their upcycling of vintage into new

Kowtow – for their use of only fair trade organic cotton

Melanie Child – for her entirely upcycled and innovative collections

‘Absence’ Makes The Heart Grow Fonder: Rebecca Scarlett’s New Jewellery Collection

Rebecca Scarlett’s latest collection, ‘Absence’, is unique, distinctive and very wearable. She has created three-dimensional jewellery pieces which resemble structures as they would look if the precious stones were missing or absent. Wish we could buy it all! ‘Absence’ was launched on Friday 5 December at Dowling Street Project Space. All ages came to support Rebecca, admire the jewellery and enjoy themselves! You can check out the collection here.

Grace About Town: August

It’s great to see how well New Zealand’s doing in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow – currently in sixth position with 14 gold medals (what an exciting netball match between NZ and England!). So, we thought we should celebrate Dunedin’s Scottish heritage with a fresh take on tartan.

Dunners has many Edinburgh connections. But, one of our most stunning gothic buildings, the University of Otago clocktower complex, bears a strong resemblance to the University of Glasgow. Our obliging model, Grace Coddington (supermodel and creative director of American Vogue), posed on campus wearing as many Scottish-inspired pieces as we could find.

Grace About Town: June

We’ve been obsessed with Grace Coddington ever since watching her in ‘The September Issue’, a documentary about the making of American Vogue’s September 2007 issue, and she stole the show! This Welsh-born former 1960s model turned stylist has been the fashion/creative director of American Vogue since 1988. Here’s a short clip of her from ‘The September Issue’:

In her honour, we named our newly acquired mannequin Grace and plan to take her, suitably attired, to notable locations around Dunners. For June, we’ve chosen to celebrate last week’s All Blacks victory against England at the Forsyth Barr Stadium. So, we’ve dressed Grace in an all black and white outfit which we feel she would like. For June, she’s posing with the ‘Harbour Mouth Molars’ by Portsmouth Drive.
