At the iD Dunedin Fashion Show, Friday 24 April, Dunedin Railway Station

The Octagon was buzzing, Di Lusso was packed out with showgoers trying the Designer Cocktail Series and the evening was beautiful. Some of our show highlights: poppy images cascading down the facade of the Railway Station; the refreshing enthusiasm of Doris Raymond as she took to the catwalk with her model; Daniel Kwok’s East-meets-West red showstopper; watching Foureyes in action just in front of us; and seeing so many great Dunedin labels rocking it to retro music.

iD Dunedin Fashion Week Official Opening, Golden Centre Mall

Last night, the Golden Centre was buzzing with excitement as designers, fashionistas, supporters and beautiful models gathered to celebrate the opening of iD Dunedin Fashion Week 2015. The highlight of our evening was chatting to the fabulous Doris Raymond, owner of Los Angeles’ vintage store, ‘The Way We Wore’, and star of Smithsonian Channel’s ‘L.A. Frock Stars’. What an approachable, enthusiastic, friendly and down-to-earth lady!

An amazing time was had by all, and the Quartz Reef flowed!

iD Emerging Designer Awards, Dunedin Town Hall, 3 April

What an exciting evening – our first time at this event and our first time as members of iD media! The newly revamped Dunedin Town Hall was packed with fashionistas, models, designers and their enthusiastic supporters which added to the atmosphere. It was great to meet and talk with other media (including a lovely journalist from Singapore – sorry I didn’t catch your name). Francis Hooper of World, one of the judging panel, in his praise of the designers said that the “collections have shone”.

Playing Shop

We’re counting down to the start of iD Dunedin Fashion Week’s 15th Anniversary with so many incredible events to suit all tastes. First, there’s the iD Designer Sale at the Dunedin Railway Station. It will be buzzing! Alternatively, the Vintage Roundup (upstairs 27 Moray Place) is a must for the vintage and craft enthusiast. The event is being organised by the incomparable Tannia Lee of Most Wanted Vintage.

Both events are on Saturday and will show the diversity of what Dunedin has to offer. Not only do we intend to be at both, but we are running a one-off stall at the Vintage Roundup. Being enthusiastic amateurs, we’ve been playing shop! Take a look at what we’re selling. And we do have a few pieces of menswear.

Just The Boys

It’s time to reflect on the year that’s just ending. Let’s start with some of the multi-talented guys we’ve enjoyed featuring this year. In alphabetical order …

Finn Andrews

The captivating frontman of The Veils dazzled us with his musicianship when the band played at Sammy’s in July. The Veils are currently back in New Zealand and will be performing locally at Rhythm and Alps at Cardrona near Wanaka (New Year’s Eve).

Nathan Berg

This American musical prodigy changed direction to become an economics/mathematical hotshot and now works at the University of Otago. But he still finds time to wow audiences with his bass playing at Circadian Rhythm Cafe Friday night jazz sessions as part of the trio Philtre.

Wesley Fourie

South African-born Wesley, model and blogger, has raised the bar of Dunedin man-style, favouring local labels such as NOM*d and Company of Strangers. Check out some of his looks here.

Alan Haig

This locally born music legend has brought Dunedin’s beautiful scenery to our attention through his photography. Greetings cards featuring Alan’s photos can be purchased from Digiart and Design (Port Chalmers) and Portobello Gallery which also sells his prints. This week, the Sunday Star Times rated the re-released 1988 Snapper EP (Flying Nun label), in which Alan plays drums, as a musical “standout” of 2013.

Frits Homburg

Where would the Dunedin cultural scene be without Frits and his exuberant partner in crime, Debbie? Their stylish cafe, Purple Rain, is the perfect venue for musical extravanganzas and retro parties. Frits’ extensive knowledge of vintage clothing and collectibles comes in handy at Dunedin’s Vintage Roundups.

Richard Ley-Hamilton

Local musician Richard shows that Dunedin musical talent is alive and kicking. He is the lead singer of Males who have recently released the album ‘Run Run Run/Males Males Males’. They opened for The Veils in July and will be supporting Die! Die! Die! at Chicks Hotel on New Year’s Eve.

Sam Ralph

Flamboyant Otago Polytechnic Fashion graduate, Sam, is alas no longer in Dunedin, having chosen to pursue his dream of becoming a designer across the Tasman. His acclaimed capsule collection of menswear was much admired at iD Dunedin Fashion Week 2013.

Jon Thom

Central Otago-raised artist Jon (of Dunedin’s Moodie Tuesday) designs some of the best t-shirts in New Zealand. You can find them on celebrities including Colin Mathura-Jeffree and X Factor’s Tom Batchelor. His original artworks are highly sought after. Jon was one of the artists featured in the ‘Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Sailor’ exhibition held in Wanaka in November.

Rakel Blom Clothing Is Now Online

Rakel Blomsterberg was the sensation of iD Dunedin Fashion Week this year. Everyone was blown away by the originality, quality and attention to detail of her Rakel Blom clothing collection (‘The World Through My Eyes’). It was no surprise that she took out the Peroni First Place prize at the iD International Emerging Designer Awards – the first win ever for an Otago Polytechnic student. Rakel is now based in London and commercially producing clothing developed from the collection she showed at iD. The designs are vibrant, youthful and fresh. We couldn’t resist ordering a couple of pieces. They are very wearable, affordable and well made. You can visit her online shop here; there are lots of designs to choose from. Rakel, we wish you tonnes of success!

Di Lusso iD Designer Sale, The Best Dunedin Fashion Week Sale Yet!

In 2011, it was at the Glenroy Auditorium. In 2012, it was at the Edgar Sports Centre. But the Dunedin Public Art Gallery was the perfect place for art and fashion to merge. The vibe was family friendly and there was plenty of space. Although we all wanted to bag a bargain, the atmosphere was uplifting as people encouraged each other to make the right purchase.
