Fabulous Finds 8

The last few weeks have been surreal and exciting. Now it’s back down to earth with some bargains!

As usual, Two Squirrels Vintage in Milton has come up trumps with another lovely vintage dress, this time from the early 1940s. Closer to home, Maher shoes (in Wall Street Mall) really impresses with their unique and affordable footwear. New Zealander Glen Maher owns the company and designs all the shoes which includes the best men’s shoes around. The re-vamped and re-opened Dunedin Paper Bag Princess store is now run by a local and it shows! There’s some great bargains to be found for both vintage and designer lovers.

Postcards From Queenstown

Dear Dunedin,

After a relaxing week in Wanaka, we’ve hit the lively streets of Queenstown – just as beautiful, but a few more people and a cosmopolitan vibe. Trending: arancini, Segway personal transporters, stand up paddle boards, classical instruments and tight ropes.

We’re obsessed with Jane Campion’s mini-series ‘Top of the Lake’ which was filmed in and around Queenstown and has been nominated for Golden Globes and SAG awards. So we sought out some of the film locations.

Walnut Cottage, near Lake Hayes, is one of our all-time favourite cafés serving Indonesian and Kiwi fare. There, we enjoyed the company of two very handsome and enthusiastic boys, Beau Beau and Jackie.

Before leaving Central, we headed to Sam Neill’s (yes, the world-renowned actor) ‘Two Paddocks’ Redbank near Clyde – the least pretentious and most beautiful vineyard we’ve ever visited. We didn’t see Sam but were really well looked after by the delightful and informative Jenny Blance (office manager) who even gave us a tour of the property. We enjoyed the numerous artworks (including Ralph Hotere, Laurence Aberhart, Marti Friedlander and Bill Hammond) and meeting some of the adorable farm pets, mostly named after famous actors and actresses. And of course there was the wine!

Is It Really Winter? Plenty In Bloom At The Dunedin Botanic Garden

With temperatures of 18°C this week it’s hard to believe it’s actually mid-winter. The roses are out of action but so what – there are plenty of other species to fill the gap, creating a riot of colour. You can be sure of a warm welcome from the ducks, especially if they’re treated to grain from the information kiosk. Don’t forget the parrots; they’re hungry for attention too. Happy 150th anniversary!

Art Meets Fashion Archive at Milford Galleries Dunedin

We couldn’t have found a better location for this photo shoot than Milford Galleries (18 Dowling Street, Dunedin). Not only were the staff super helpful but the lighting was perfect. Their current exhibitions (featuring Robert Ellis, Dick Frizzell and Karl Maughan amongst others) include some of our favourite artists which made the experience all the more enjoyable. Hurry, you have till the 8th May to see these exhibitions. Thank you so much Milford Galleries.

Although some of the featured fabrics are collaborations with artists, the inspiration behind the other fabrics is our own interpretation. We’ve also included some images of paintings that aren’t in Milford Galleries.
