Say Cricket With Flowers

Cricket World Cup fever is here! As Dunedin hosted international teams at the University Oval, floral flags of the participating countries sprang up outside the Dunedin Railway Station – how ingenious! Cricket-inspired fashion is a perennial favourite, with recent collections by overseas designers such as Chanel, Alexander McQueen and Tommy Hilfiger. NZ designers Kate Sylvester and Karen Walker have also joined the trend. Anyone for cricket?

‘A Hard Day’s Night’ at Taste Merchants, 28 June

In 1964, The Beatles unbelievably performed in Dunedin’s Town Hall. Fifty years on, Taste Merchants (Lower Stuart Street) saluted the Fab Four with a Beatles extravaganza. Over three nights, local musicians performed a selection of Beatles classics. So stoked that last night’s performances included ‘A Day in the Life’, the best ever Beatles song in our opinion. Other highlights included ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’, ‘Paperback Writer’ and ‘Drive My Car’. It was a fabulously fun night – it just goes to show that all you need is love!

Record Fair at Taste Merchants, 10 May

There’s more to Taste Merchants than wine and gigs. They also hold occasional vinyl fairs. We popped along to one last Saturday and enjoyed perusing through the eccentric, the classics and the undiscovered treasures. There was something for everyone! Keep an eye on their Facebook page for the next fair. One of the things we love about Dunners is that events like this happen!

The Prophet Hens Roost at Taste Merchants (36 Lower Stewart Street)

Taste Merchants ticks all the boxes for the perfect Friday night out where you can get up close and personal with some of Dunedin’s best bands while sampling quality craft brew from Castle MacAdam Wine Shop next door. By night, this daytime cosy cafe/wine tasting room is transformed into an edgy underground gig venue. Not surprisingly, owner Darren Stedman drums for local band The Prophet Hens. So who are the Prophet Hens? Lineup: Karl Bray (guitar/vocals); Penelope Esplin (keys/vocals); Robin Cederman (bass) and Darren Stedman (drums). The band name is based on a 19th century myth in which the ‘prophet’ hen lays eggs with messages about the second-coming. Last Friday, the band performed a lively, eclectic mix of their new material, supported by G.A.G.
